Wilderness Salve | 30mL

As much as we may love being in the wilderness, it's no surprise that we often require protection from its numerous elements as well.

It's also quite a hassle to have to pack bulky containers of sun screen and insect repellent, applying each one individually when heading out on an excursion of any kind.

And, given the potentially hazardous effects of DEET, it's becoming all the more clear that a better solution may be needed.

After several seasons worth of extensive testing, Borealism is happy to have finalized an effective DEET-free, pocket-sized 2-in-1 solution for protection against both UV radiation and the unrelenting insects of the wilderness.

Made with Zinc Oxide, Shea Butter, Beeswax and a number of insect-repelling oils, this Wilderness Salve is a soft-texture lotion that forms a natural physical barrier to protect against the many elements that we find ourselves in.

Tested in some of the most ridiculously mosquito-infested areas of the woods that could be found, ample effort had been put into understanding the right combination of scents that kept insects (mainly mosquitoes, deerflies and gnats) at bay.

Protection Against UV Rays
Coconut Oil, Non-Nano Zinc Oxide and Shea Butter are proven UV blockers that are typically found in most non-commercial sun block creams; also included in this mixture is Red Raspberry Seed Oil, which is known to carry a high SPF rating in itself.

Protection Against Insects
While nothing can match the unparalleled [and unnatural] power of DEET (N,N-Diethyl-3methylbenzamide), numerous scents act as an effective deterrent against most insects in the wilderness, namely Citronella and Lemon Eucalyptus, both of which are included in this mixture, along with Atlantic Cedar, Lemongrass and Pine Oil.

Sustainability Notes
All efforts have been made to source ingredients from environmentally-conscious suppliers. For instance, the Beeswax that's used is hand-poured from an apiary nestled in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania that does not see the use of any pesticides or fertilizers, matching the standards of certified organic quality beeswax. The Shea Butter is harvested from modern shea-processing centres in Ghana whereby sustainability and work standards are prioritized in the processing of Shea trees.

Why stray from DEET?

The debate regarding any deleterious effects relating to N,N-Diethyl-3methylbenzamide (DEET) is a real one. Misinformation floats about constantly and almost all studies are usually rendered inconclusive. It's quite the rabbit-hole to sink into, as it doesn't take very long to come across certain accounts that seem to undoubtedly paint DEET as a carcinogenic compound, linking it to testicular cancer or various other genotoxic irregularities while other studies work to prove the opposite.

Given the extent to which misinformation is presented and to which regulatory bodies can be susceptible to corporate influence, why not  play it safe whenever alternatives are available.

As more and more evidence is being assembled in order to shine a light onto the possible threats that DEET poses to the central nervous and endocrine systems, it may be more than worthwhile to explore alternatives formulated from natural ingredients, sourced responsibly and tested truthfully.
